2019 TBP NFL Mock Draft

With the draft just hours away, The Broken Plane has finalized its 2019 Mock Draft. We've enlisted Twitter Power-Users Jonah and Campbell to help us make the selections. JB, you're on the clock!

If you don't know what it is we're doing here, pop back to the Intro real quick!

JB: With the 1st pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select, from the University of Oklahoma, QB, Kyler Murray. Kyler Murray was the best player in college football last year. He plays the most important position in the game, and he comes out of a college program that runs the same system as the one the Cardinals are installing in Arizona. New Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury and Murray have known each other since Murray was at Allen High School in Texas. Kingsbury worked hard to recruit Murray to Texas Tech, and hasn’t been shy about telling anyone who would listen that he should be drafted with the first pick in the NFL draft. That is, until he landed a job with a team that held the number one pick. (Wink, wink. We get you, Kliff.) Murray combines the arm of Patrick Mahomes, with better escapability than Russell Wilson. His ability to make the right reads in the offense was demonstrated all of last year as he passed for 4361 yards, and 42 touchdowns, to only 7 interceptions. Draft Murray here, trade Rosen for picks, and do your best to move on into the future.

JB: With the 2nd pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select, from the University of Alabama, DT, Quinnen Williams. A new day has dawned in the NFL. With offenses increasingly going to spread looks, and quarterbacks exploiting gaps caused by those formations, Defenses need their Edge rushers to stay responsible for play containment on the outside. With Edge rushers needing to stay home, and Offensive Lines spread out by formation, the rise of the interior pass rusher will continue. Besides that, doesn't it make more sense to put your best pass rushers up against the other teams worst pass blockers? Why do I want to beat my head into pulp against David Bakhtiari or Trent Brown when I can Up and Under JR Sweezy? Pairing Williams with DeForest Buckner will force offenses to choose who to double. With all due respect to Nick Bosa, a stud DT is more valuable than a stud edge rusher.

Jonah: With the 3rd pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the New York Jets select, from THE Ohio State University, DE, Nick Bosa. With Quinnen Williams coming off the board, it’s a matter of filling defensive line positions and Nick is the best d-lineman available here.

JB: With the 4th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Oakland Raiders select, from the University of Kentucky, EDGE, Josh Allen. The Raiders traded away Khalil Mack to the Bears, then wondered why their pass rush couldn't get home. They finished the year dead last in the league with 13 sacks. The next worst team (New York Giants) had 30. Josh Allen provides instant pass rush credibility, but he's also a complete LB, not just an edge rusher. Kentucky used him in coverage on close to 50% of his plays last year. That versatility will let him stay on the field for all three downs.

TK: With the 5th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select, from Mississippi State University, DL, Montez Sweat. Sure, the Bucs lost Kwon Alexander. Yeah, they already have JPP and Gerald McCoy. But pass rush is where it’s at in this iteration of the NFL. Sweat feels like a can’t-miss prospect, while you might be reaching for a LB at 5. It also affords Licht the ability to move on from (or trade?) the Great Geraldini without much consequence. Tampa will fill out their LB corps later, it’s less important.

Jonah: With the 6th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the New York Giants select, from the University of Alabama, OL, Jonah Williams. There is a lot of talk about the Giants taking a quarterback here but the reality is, there isn’t much of an upgrade at the position, this draft. When you have a major need and you are on the board this early, you fill that need with the best player at that position. It’s between Williams and Jawaan Taylor here. Williams is a versatile tackle and the NY rebuild begins in the trenches, protecting their veteran QB. Obviously his legendary first name doesn’t hurt him in a toss up situation.

Campbell: With the 7th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select, from the University of Florida, OL, Jawaan Taylor. I understand that the Jags need a younger quarterback, even though they did trade for Nick Foles. However, we all understand that if the QB does not have a good O-Line, he is worthless. Look at Andrew Luck and the Colts. Taylor should be able to lock down an OL position for years to come. The dude is big as heck and should contend for a clear starting job as soon as he is signed.

TK: With the 8th pick in the 2019 NFL TGBBPMock Draft, the Detroit Lions select, from Louisiana State University, LB, Devin White. "But TK! You just said a LB at 5 is a reach!" I know, I know. But Detroit's linebackers are in a much sorrier state than Tampa Bay's. Quick, name a Lionbacker, I'll wait...
...
...
That's what I thought. 2017 first round selection (21st overall) Jarrad Davis has not lived up to his draft position thus far. Devin White can make an immediate impact at the second level for Patricia's defense. Detroit has enough going for them up front that they can afford to pass on one of the big names left in order to fill a definite position of need. I also wouldn't be upset if they traded back in order to target a CB, another area in need of improvement.

Jonah: With the 9th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Buffalo Bills select, from the University of Iowa, TE, T.J. Hockenson. Buffalo has a wide gap to close between their offense and defense. I expect that they are still trying to build up their offense and tight end is a big need. Hockenson is arguably one of the best tight ends in this draft, and young QB Allen needs all the targets and playmakers he can get. Buffalo, looking to beef up their offense, can’t go wrong with this move.

TK: With the 10th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Denver Broncos select, from the University of Oklahoma, OL, Cody Ford. PROTECT. JOE. FLACCO. Seriously, he can't move. At all. If Denver wants to stand a chance, adding talent to the offensive line has the best shot at paying huge dividends immediately. Ford can play tackle or guard, so he affords plenty of flexibility as well. He'll also open up running lanes for Freeman and Lindsay.

Jonah: With the 11th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select, from the University of Michigan, LB, Devin Bush. The linebacker from Michigan is an every down back that will make an immediate impact. Bush is a great sideline-to-sideline linebacker who will immediately improve a struggling Bengals defense.

TK: With the 12th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers select, from the University of Michigan, DE, Rashan Gary. Really would have liked Bush here to groom behind Blake Martinez for one season, but it wasn’t meant to be. No matter! Gary should be able to contribute from day one and give Pettine’s unit a relentless pass rush. Shades of Ziggy Ansah in his game, without the constant injuries? Sign me up!

JB: With the 13th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Miami Dolphins select, from Clemson University, DE, Clelin Ferrel. Would have like to take Rashan Gary here, but Clelin is a good fit for the Dolphins. They're going to need to replace Cameron Wake. Brian Flores would like a DE that is stout against the run. Ferrel fits both those bills. Might be a tad early for him to come off the board, but it's not a huge reach.

Campbell: With the 14th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select, from the University of Houston, DT, Ed Oliver. Dude is a stud on a really good Houston team. Though he is fairly short for being in the tackle position (6'1"), he has the vertical quickness that most tackles don't have. Similarly, he makes up for his slow foot speed in agility and hand quickness. Likewise, I think that he will start improving a line that was one of the worst last year, just one year removed from the Falcons' run to the Super Bowl. It is worth keeping an eye on whether the Falcons trade up to get Oliver.

Campbell: With the 15th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Washington Football Team select, from the University of Missouri, QB, Drew Lock. Let's be honest, Washington is in a shit-hole right now with Bruce Allen and his greedy ass making life insufferable for the team. [Can you tell Campbell is a Washington fan?] I am a strong believer that Washington will be trading for Josh Rosen with this pick. Drew Lock is fairly good but will not be a Day 1 starter. I just hope that Washington doesn't screw up their draft this year. I straight up don't know how this draft pick will go since the Cardinals trade or even a trade with the Patriots seems reasonable at this juncture. I am going with a safe pick in Drew Lock, but I'd see Washington grab Rosen, rather than a relatively unknown QB in Lock (sorry Mizzou fans).

Campbell: With the 16th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Carolina Panthers select, from Florida State University, EDGE, Brian Burns. The Panthers defense was HORRIBLE last year. Honestly, the entire team was bad, but in a stacked defensive draft, it would be embarrassing for them to pass up on a solid starter. Though Burns is a bit light for his size, he has the ability to be really good. He needs to add some weight so that he can compete at a higher level, but nevertheless, I think the Panthers will be adding some defensive strength with Burns.

Campbell: With the 17th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the New York Giants select, from the University of Oklahoma, WR, Marquise Brown. Brown did not participate in the combine due to injury, yet his college performance speaks for itself. Brown brings something that the Giants need after losing Odell this offseason. The Giants need to restart and rebuild their wide receiver corps. Brown is a speedy WR, but he will be able to compete at a high level for the Giants.

Campbell: With the 18th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select, from Washington State University, OL, Andre Dillard. In my opinion, this draft is one of the deepest for offensive linemen. Dillard is big and strong, standing at 6'4" and weighing over 330 pounds. Being an offensive tackle, he will have to protect his quarterback's blindside, which puts a lot of pressure on the amount of trust that Kirk Cousins might have in him. Nevertheless, Dillard will be able to start immediately and help with Kirk's blindside. Though I cannot see him being a Pro-Bowler, Dillard will have a successful career in the NFL.

JB: With the 19th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Tennessee Titans select, from the University of Washington, CB, Byron Murphy. This pick could go a number of different ways. The Titans could use a pass rusher, a big time wide receiver, or interior offensive line help. But Murphy feels like the best player available at a position of need for the Titans. I was leaning towards Greedy Williams because he's a little bigger, and more athletic. There were two things that pushed me towards Murphy. The first is that Williams doesn't seem like he wants to make tackles. It's never been more important for a player in the defensive secondary to be able to tackle. The second thing is that Murphy has better field awareness than Williams. It shows up in zone coverage. It will translate better to the NFL.

Campbell: With the 20th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select, from the University of South Carolina, WR, Deebo Samuel. As we know from the bowl season, Deebo did not play. Nevertheless, he was the number one receiver on a very good SC team. The Steelers are not in need of a #1 WR even after the Brown trade. They are looking for someone who can block and operate in the slot. I do not know how Deebo would feel with slot duties or being a number two WR. However, he brings the level of talent that is needed to reload the Steelers WR corps. Also, he is a better pick for the Steelers than D.K. Metcalf, who I think will either go to the Bills or fall to the second round.

JB: With the 21st pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select, from North Carolina State University, OL, Garrett Bradbury. Justin Britt is the starter at center for the Seahawks. The idea here would be to move the hyper-athletic Bradbury to guard where the Seahawks have struggled. Last year's starter, J.R. Sweezy, has moved on to the Cardinals, and D.J. Fluker missed substantial time due to foot injuries. Bradbury will fit into OC Brian Schottenheimer's power running game immediately, and it never hurts to have a starting guard who can swing to center as needed.

TK: With the 22nd pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select, from the University of Alabama, RB, Josh Jacobs. While everyone else transitions to passing, Roman is going to unleash a ground attack that would make Genghis Khan jealous. Baltimore has shuffled through running back after running back since Ray Rice, and now they have found their guy. His receiving ability out of the backfield will be key in the Ravens offense as well. A three-headed running back monster with Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, and Jacobs will drive opponents and fantasy footballers crazy.

TK: With the 23rd pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Houston Texans select, from Kansas State University, OT, Dalton Risner. The Texans need offensive line help. End of story.

TK: With the 24th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Oakland Raiders select, from the University of Iowa, TE, Noah Fant. One year ago under Gruden, Jared Cook had himself a season. Finally, 11 years later. Then he left. Fant can step right into the offense and provide the Raiders offense another weapon for Carr. Fant is speedy, explosive, and intelligent, catches the ball with his hands, and has the size to create mismatches. The Ravens are upset they drafted two tight ends last year.

Jonah: With the 25th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select, from the Clemson University, DT, Christian Wilkins. The Eagles value their trench players and in a scenario with Marquise Brown off the board, this is the move to the next best player available. Defensive tackle is probably not their biggest need, but Wilkins fits the Eagles' lineman prototype to a T and is a steal at number 25 overall.

TK: With the 26th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select, from Mississippi State University, DT, Jeffery Simmons. The Colts are going to take a chance in the first round and draft a guy who won’t play for a season. Prior to his ACL injury, Simmons was likely going to be drafted in the top ten. Indianapolis also has two picks in Round 2, so they can continue to fill in the immediate needs with Day 2 talent.

Jonah: With the 27th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Oakland Raiders select, from Michigan State University, CB, Justin Layne. The Raiders have a lot of holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball and their secondary is one of them. As a former receiver, Layne has great ball skills and is an immediate upgrade for the Raiders secondary.

Campbell: With the 28th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers select, from Boston College, OL, Chris Lindstrom. The Chargers need to protect Phillip Rivers for the next couple of years, and they can solidify their O-line with Lindstrom. The dude is well-sized and strong even though he did play for a mediocre BC team. However, he knows how to run-block and gets to the second level fairly well. I am worried that he is a bit undersized to be a solid offensive lineman, but he should do well once he gets a couple games under his belt. He should be able to protect Rivers and Melvin Gordon, while also having the ability to extend plays past the initial contact.

JB: With the 29th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select, from Old Dominion University, EDGE, Oshane Ximines. Trading Frank Clark away to the Chiefs is a bold, but not surprising, move for the Seahawks. The production was there, and Clark is only getting better, but his rookie deal was coming to an end, and the Seahawks weren't going to spend $105 million to keep him. With Clark gone, there is a need for an edge rusher to take his spot. Ximines has the tools to compete. There are some questions about whether he can consistently play the run, but he'll have success on early downs rushing the passer.

Jonah: With the 30th pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers select, from THE Ohio State University, WR, Parris Campbell. Campbell is a utility receiver on par with guys like Randall Cobb. The Packers need targets for Aaron Rodgers and Campbell can hurt defenders from the slot and out of the backfield. Campbell has elite agility speed, running a position-best 4.03 in the short shuttle at the Combine.

Jonah: With the 31st pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select, from Texas A&M University, OL, Erik McCoy. The Rams have some question marks on the offensive line. Roger Saffold is gone and, with Whitworth getting up in age, depth doesn’t hurt. McCoy can be an immediate starter, his pass protection is good, his zone run-blocking is good, and he is tough and athletic. Exactly what you want in an offensive lineman.

JB: With the 32nd pick in the 2019 TGBBP NFL Mock Draft, the New England Patriots select, from Clemson University, DT, Dexter Lawrence. Standing 6'4" and tipping the scales at 342 lbs, Lawrence is a great fit for Belichick's 3-4 front. Easy pick to close things out, although I think it would be more fun if the Patriots got hold of Dwayne Haskins at this spot

Thanks to Jonah and Campbell for helping us out with the mock draft. Think we're way off base? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter!
